Pinnacle Point Club Competition Recap – 20 November 2024

The recent 4 Ball Alliance competition at Pinnacle Point brought together 39 players on an overcast day with light winds and favourable course conditions. The unique format (Par 3s: 3 to count, Par 4s: 2 to count, Par 5s: 4 to count) added an exciting strategic twist to the competition. A special thank you to Investec Private Banking, the sponsor of the day, for their generous support, which added excitement and camaraderie to the event.

Top Performers of the Day:

  1. Greg Heuer, Richard Austin, Joe Van den Berg, Patrick Krisper – 99 Points (c/In)
  2. Andre Steyn, Markus (Snr) Smal, Stephen Combe, Jaco du Plessis – 99 Points (c/Out)
  3. David James, Ian Gallacher, David Johnstone, Justin van Alphen – 97 Points
  4. Suzette Van Schalkwyk, Marianda De Villiers, Amanda Lourens, Marina Juta – 96 Points
  5. Glen Taute, William Taute, Quintin Byleveldt, Franco Groenewald – 94 Points

Congratulations to the winning team of Greg Heuer, Richard Austin, Joe Van den Berg, and Patrick Krisper, who emerged victorious with a strong 99 points after count-in.

For members unfamiliar with the count-in/out rules: if two players (or teams) achieve the same score, the following rules are applied to break the tie: (1) Compare the total score of the last nine holes; the higher score determines the count-in. (2) If still tied, compare the last six holes. (3) If still tied, compare the last three holes, then the last hole, and finally, the score on stroke 1.

Noteworthy Moments and Course Insights:

  • Most Challenging Hole: Hole 16 was the toughest for the day, with players averaging 6.51 strokes, testing patience and skill.
  • Easiest Hole: Hole 5 ranked as the easiest, with an average score of 5.67, giving players a great opportunity to secure points.
  • Birdie Highlights: Exceptional performances included Quintin Byleveldt, who birdied Holes 3, 5, 6, and 18, and Ignus Du Preez, who shone with birdies on Holes 11, 13, and 18. Dave Cooke and David Johnstone also showcased their skill, each securing birdies on two different holes.

Special Mentions:

  • 2 Clubs: Congratulations to the players who achieved “2 Clubs” this week:
    • Ian Gallacher (Hole 9), Ignus Du Preez (Hole 13), Jaco du Plessis (Hole 13), Joe Van den Berg (Hole 17), Marina Juta (Hole 13), Philip Greyling (Hole 9), Roelien Harrison (Hole 17)
  • Closest to Pin: Precision shots brought Bertus Smit closest on Hole 7, Philip Greyling on Hole 9, Marina Juta on Hole 13, and Roelien Harrison on Hole 17.

Score Adjustments:
This week, 11 scorecard adjustments were made, addressing errors in alliance scores, Stableford points, and totals. One significant adjustment involved a team whose total score was incorrectly totalled due to an error in their In-total. This resulted in a 10-point reduction to their final score. Without this correction, the team would have been declared the winners of the competition. This highlights the importance of accurate scorecard verification to ensure fair results for all participants.

The following types of adjustments are the most common:

  1. Incorrect Stableford Points: If a player, who does not stroke on Hole 1, par 4, recorded a gross score of 6 and incorrectly allocated 1 Stableford point for the hole, but the correct points should have been 0, the scorecard verifier will adjust the player’s Stableford points for that hole to the correct number, which is 0.
  2. Nett Double Bogey: If a player, who strokes on Hole 1, par 4, recorded a gross score of 6 and incorrectly allocated 0 Stableford points for the hole, but the gross score of 6 generates 1 Stableford point, the scorecard verifier will adjust the player’s gross score for that hole to a nett double bogey of 7. While this is also considered a Stableford points adjustment, the key difference is that the scorecard verifier assumes a recorded 0 indicates that the player either did not finish the hole or entered an incorrect nett double bogey.

Players are kindly reminded to verify their scorecards before submission to avoid errors. The club will individually contact players if adjustments affected their HNA score submissions.

Thank you again to Investec Private Banking for sponsoring the day and to all participants for making the competition a success. Congratulations to the winners and special mentions for their incredible performances. We look forward to seeing you on the course next week!

Reaching new heights
SET YOURSELF A CHALLENGE

The greatest joy that coaches have when working with juniors is embracing their enthusiasm to get better. It seems so natural to them to ‘assume’ they will be better tomorrow, and even better next week. They expect to be on a journey to improvement.
It should be that way with everybody
The great thing about golf is that it does, along with the amazing social connections, offer everyone the opportunity to experience the accomplishments of improvement, without it requiring competitive golf.

Not every accomplishment has to be a win in an event. Sometimes they’re personal accomplishments. Breaking 100 for the first time. Writing down a score in the 80s. Achieving a single figure handicap. Of course winning an event is also nice.

Enjoy it like A CHILD

You don’t have to stop learning. You shouldn’t stop improving. It’s an opportunity to experience real joy. Embrace the qualities of a child and start a journey ‘assuming’ you can be better. Approach playing golf like they do. Get out late one afternoon and play 9-holes like you were a child again.

If you need someone to play with, let us know.

Boring is exciting

BE RELENTLESS

WITH THE LAG

Have you ever considered how much better your scorecard would be without any 3-putts?  How often is your second putt from outside 3 feet?

If you want to remove 3-putts, then speed control is critical. Shift your pre-round practice routine to prioritise distance control. Dedicate time putting to the collar of the practice green. Gradually increase the distance with each putt. Focus on your putts ending up against the collar. Perfect speed is the key. When your putts have ideal pace, even your misses will end up closer to the hole.

UNLOCK CONTROL AND
CONFIDENCE ON THE GREEN

Speed control is often a consequence of a good putting technique. It’s one of the subjects in our ‘Break 85 Coaching Program’. Speed control sounds boring. But there’s nothing boring about shooting in the low 80s.
