The Stimpmeter

What is a Stimpmeter? The Stimpmeter is a simple, accurate device manufactured by the USGA that allows one to make a standard measurement of, and place a numerical figure on, the speed of a putting green. It does so by measuring ball roll distance in feet.

How putting greens are managed has a tremendous influence on their speed. One of the most significant aspects of a golf course is the uniformity of its putting greens. The greens should place a premium on well-executed shots while exacting a penalty for less precise shots. Green speeds today are significantly faster than when the modern Stimpmeter was first released in 1978. This can partially be attributed to greater emphasis on and understanding of green speed and putting surface uniformity, but also the many advances in golf course maintenance technology. Determining an appropriate green speed for daily play will vary considerably for each golf facility and is dependent on many factors, some of which include: turfgrass species, putting green architecture and construction method, budget, time of year and golfer ability.

Knowing the speed of a putting green may assist in determining whether a hole location will give fair results. The Stimpmeter is a great management tool and can help the Course Superintendent tremendously. By keeping good records, one will be better able to observe, determine and explain variances in green speed throughout the year and compensate for them.

Golfing regards,
Konrad Suhr,

Dear Ladies,

Another busy week of golf is behind us, with three match games played!

Our Bronze Team played at George, suffering their first loss of the season, but they still proudly sit at the top of the Bronze Section 2 Log. Well done, Ladies, and keep up the great work!

Silver 2 had a strong win at Oubaai but unfortunately lost their home game against Pinnacle Silver 1, who are currently 2nd on the log. Keep pushing, Silver Teams, your efforts are showing!

Due to the inclement weather, we sadly had to cancel Bunnies this week. But don’t let that stop you, keep practising, girls!

We are all incredibly excited for our Ryder Cup event this weekend, where South will take on West, with a fantastic 92 Ladies participating! The weather is looking promising, and Pinnacle Point is sure to shine with its beauty and warm hospitality.

Enjoy every moment, let the games begin!

Best regards,
Gesi Graham

This past weekend, the Stinger GC Foundation brought our Golf Development Clinic to Montagu – in proud support of the Montagu Golf Club’s junior development programme.

Led by our PGA Golf Development Coach Jake Roos, the clinic focused on upskilling local coaches with tools and techniques they can take forward – helping to ensure the programme’s long-term success.

Jake also delivered short game and long game coaching to aspiring young golfers, helping them build not just their swings, but their confidence, discipline and love for the game.

For us, this is more than coaching – it’s about leaving a legacy, identifying potential, and giving kids the opportunity to dream bigger, aim higher, and begin a new – not only in golf, but in life.

Watch the full recap and feel the energy, talent, and passion.

The Stinger GC Junior Academy’s coaches, Val and Nicole, presented a skill testing and fun event for the various Tiers of the Academy. Thank you for all the passion and investment in the future of our juniors!

A game for all

Competition doesn’t MATTER

Particularly when you’re starting out in golf, the most important thing is that you enjoy yourself.

Bend some rules

Certain rules are unavoidable, like teeing off from the tee box and repairing your divots. But if you don’t want to play from the rough or bunker or over water, drop a ball in the fairway. If you want to tee it up on the fairway, do it. Do anything to make your experience more enjoyable.

Simplify things

Take a sleeve of golf balls, a short iron and your putter and play 18 holes of approach shots. Use the walk between tee box and approach to simply enjoy being outdoors. Better yet, bring a friend along.
