Pinnacle Point Bunker Facts

Dear Members,

I’d like to share some interesting facts about the bunkers on our golf course:

  • We have a total of 104 bunkers throughout the course.
  • Hole 3 features the most bunkers with 13, while Hole 4 has the fewest, with just 1.
  • All bunkers are hand-raked daily by our dedicated maintenance staff.
  • Each year, we add approximately 180 tons of sand to maintain the correct bunker depth and consistency.

While bunkers are technically classified as hazards, they require significant time and effort to maintain. We kindly ask all players to rake the bunkers after use and help us keep them in top condition for everyone’s enjoyment.

Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.

Golfing regards,
Konrad Suhr

        Golf, The Game That Endures

This week, we’re sharing a fascinating piece of golf history that highlights just how resilient and passionate golfers can be. During World War II, many British golf clubs continued to operate and allowed play despite the ongoing conflict. One of the most remarkable examples comes from the Richmond Golf Club in London, which introduced a temporary set of rules to account for the wartime interruptions that could occur mid-round. Luckily, similar rules have not been needed since.

The severity and even absurdity of some of these rules is astounding. But they offer a glimpse into the passion and dedication that golf inspires. Golfers are known for braving the worst weather to get a round in, but few can match the toughness of those who played during WWII, with the threat of bombs overhead.

        Among Richmond’s wartime rules were:

        • During gunfire or while bombs are falling, players may take cover without penalty for ceasing play.
        • A ball moved by enemy action may be replaced.
        • A player whose stroke is affected by the simultaneous explosion of a bomb may play another ball from the same spot – penalty one stroke.

Yes, you read that right: even if a bomb went off mid-swing, you’d still be penalised a stroke for replaying the shot. So, what’s a bit of wind on South Africa’s #1 golf course?

        REFLECTION TIME

        THE GOOD SPIKE MARK

Spikes in your stress level or blood sugar are bad. Spikes of exhilaration and enjoyment are great.

As you reflect on golf this year, what are the best moments?
How many of those were with a putter in hand?
How good were you with your putter?

        1. Did you plan your longer putts well? Was it a sink-or-miss approach? Did you embrace the fact that you will sink far more testing 4 & 5 foot 2nd putts going straight up hill, than going downhill or across a slope?
        2. When reading greens, did you think enough about the slope in the last few feet when a slowing speed makes the ball more vulnerable to slope?
        3. What method did you use to control distance? How calibrated was the size of your backswing with the distance you’re putting?
        4. With your misses inside of 10 feet, was it an ‘aim’ or ‘alignment’ challenge?

THE FIRST THING YOU SHOULD DO...

If you’re interested in shooting lower scores, then the first thing to do in is to sharpen up your game on the green. For most regular golfers there are immediately 2 or 3 shots to be saved, and more exhilarating spikes to enjoy.

You want a softer feel on all pitch shots, chip shots, and putts.
The soft thin cover, on the Srixon Soft Feel Golf Ball, together with the soft centered core provides you with a soft feel off the face and more control over spin and distance. But there’s no compromise. Off the driver face there is more speed and less spin for maximum distance.
And on approach there is a sweet, solid feel, with stopping power on the green.
