Dear Members,

To maintain the pristine condition of our course, we will be conducting hollow-tining from 17 to 21 March 2025. This process will help relieve soil compaction, improve water and nutrient penetration, reduce excess thatch, promote deeper root growth, and enhance airflow in the soil. We’ll be performing this core aeration during optimal soil temperatures for active growth.

Please note that both the course and Pro Shop will be closed during this time. Please contact our Golf Bookings Department for great reciprocity options.

Thank you for your understanding as we work to enhance our world-renowned golf experience.

I would like to express my gratitude for everything happening at the club. There is an incredibly positive vibe at the moment, and I truly appreciate everyone’s involvement and our extremely dedicated golf committee.

Also, a special thank you goes out to our food and beverage team for enhancing the Halfway House variety and improving the overall experience given the current circumstances. A huge shoutout to Michelle and, especially, Brett in the kitchen for making such a significant impact!

I also want to encourage all of you to participate in our Wednesday competitions. This past weekend, I was extremely proud to see 28 golfers braving the bad weather to compete in our Investec club competition. Your continued support is truly appreciated.

Looking ahead, I am excited to welcome you to next week’s first Ford IPS competition of the month—and for the year, for that matter. Let’s keep the momentum going!

Have a fantastic week, and I’ll see you on the course next week.

Best regards,
Quintin Byleveldt
Golf Director

The Practice Area

The three most common divot patterns – scattered, concentrated and linear – can be seen in this photo.

Golfers have a big impact on the amount of turf coverage and performance of practice range tees. How one practises not only influences how much turf is removed with each swing, but also how quickly the turf will recover.

A scattered divot pattern removes the most amount of turf because a full divot is removed with every swing. Scattering divots results in the most turf loss and uses up the largest area of a tee stall.

A concentrated divot pattern removes all turf in each area. By creating a large void in the turf canopy there is little opportunity for timely turf recovery.

The linear divot pattern involves placing each shot directly behind the previous divot. In so doing, a linear pattern is created and only a small amount of turf is removed with each swing. The live turf between strips of divots will ensure quick recovery of the turf. Because this divot pattern removes the least amount of turf and promotes quick recovery, it is the preferred method.

Please do your part to keep both the practice area and our course in great condition.

Golfing regards,
Konrad Suhr
Golf Course Superintendent

Dear Members,

I would like to extend my gratitude for your continuous support in participating in the events we are hosting. A special thank you as well for your participation in last week’s polls on the Captain’s Corner WhatsApp group. Your engagement is highly valued, and we are committed to enhancing your experience, particularly with our move to the upstairs Halfway House – where it was previously located during COVID. If you have any questions regarding this transition, please feel free to contact me for further clarification.

As you know, Quintin and Franco have shared informative videos about the rules. However, I recently overheard an interesting discussion in the Clubhouse regarding bunker rules – can you drop out of a bunker, and what kind of penalty shots apply?

To clarify, I found a helpful piece online from Golf Digest magazine that explains the situation in a simpler manner. You don’t have to play from a bunker. While many skilled golfers won’t need this rule, some may struggle to play a ball from the sand. To save time – and potentially a stroke or two – you can drop outside the bunker using a reference line that extends straight back from the hole through the spot of the original ball in the sand. You may drop as far back on that line as you like, but this comes with a two-stroke penalty.

I hope you all have a fantastic week ahead. Please continue to support our club in the Saturday Captain’s Competitions and this Sunday’s Mixed Competitions. A huge thank you to my supporting captains, including our ladies’ captains and vice-captains, for their ongoing dedication.

Thank you for your support!

Best regards,
Naas Grobler
Club Captain

Dear Members,

I want to take a moment to emphasise an important point from last week’s newsletter regarding handicapping. As you know, I work closely with Thys Lourens to ensure all scoring is accurately recorded. Recently, we identified that 22 adjusted gross scores were incorrectly entered during the past week’s Business League event.

To improve efficiency and communication, we will now include these results in the weekly newsletter rather than posting all photos and detailed information in the WhatsApp group. This change aims to keep the WhatsApp group manageable and effective for essential updates without unnecessary congestion.

Looking ahead, I wish you all the best for our upcoming competition. I also look forward to seeing everyone at the Sunday Mixed Couples Competition at Pinnacle Point. Let’s continue to enjoy the game and maintain the integrity of our scoring process.

Thank you,
Iain Pepper
Vice-Captain

How do you perform with that club? How wide of the target will you be with your largest slice / push or hook / pull? On average, how wide will you be? On ‘average’ (not the perfect strike), how far do you hit the club you’ve chosen?

Understanding this data, and appreciating that golf is a game of misses, provides us with two very important lessons:

These two lessons could be the stepping stones to more enjoyment from your next rounds of golf.

With the benefit of a new softer, more durable alloy, the design limits are removed. Even more feel. Increased spin control. Performs like new for much longer.

And most importantly, sole, grind, and leading-edge designs that make it easier to hit great wedge shots.

The NEW Cleveland RTZ Wedges

With design limitations removed, these are genuinely new and very high-performing wedges.

It’s your technique

Getting your golf ball to inside of 2 metres from the hole as quickly as possible, from any distance 70 metres and in, could almost be described as the game of golf. That area of the game will dominate your scorecard. That’s why we’re very excited about the design of the new Cleveland RTZ wedges.

There are grind-specific leading edges designed to make it easier to hit clean, controlled wedge shots.

Get personal

There is also an ADAPT grind that has been designed to provide the most versatility in shot-making around the green. All of this design gives us the ability to match you to a wedge that fits your swing and the game you want to play. These are exceptional wedges that require a conversation.
