Pinnacle Point: A Peter Matkovich Masterpiece

If you’ve had the incredible experience of playing Pinnacle Point, you’ve most likely heard of its renowned designer — the legendary course architect, Peter Matkovich. Carved into the cliffs overlooking the Indian Ocean, Pinnacle Point is arguably Matkovich’s most iconic creation — and certainly one of the most photographed golf courses in the world. Some have even called it “Pebble Beach on steroids.”

The transformation is nothing short of remarkable. What was once a derelict sewer treatment plant overrun with alien vegetation is now a breathtaking layout surrounded by restored coastal fynbos. The course winds its way along the cliff tops, balancing narrow challenges with generous fairways, and on at least half a dozen holes, the Indian Ocean becomes a dramatic water hazard. This is more than just a round of golf — it’s an experience. One that belongs on every golfer’s South African bucket list. Now shortlisted for the title of World’s Best Golf Course by the World Golf Awards, the extraordinary course is aiming to make history as South Africa’s first global champion.

But who is the man behind this masterpiece?

Peter Matkovich grew up in Shabani, Zimbabwe, where he began playing golf at the Shabani Golf Club, an 18-hole course owned by the local mine. He played on many of the magnificent courses in the area, all of which were also owned by mines, where he developed into a competitive amateur golfer. He turned professional in 1968, competing in Europe for three years, Australia for one year, and the Sunshine Tour for over a span of ten years. Throughout his career, he participated in two Open Championships: at Carnoustie in 1968 and St Andrews in 1970.

In 1973, Peter and his family moved to South Africa, settling at the Umhlali Country Club. There, he took on the role of club professional, which included playing professionally and serving as the course superintendent. Peter also began designing and constructing new holes while redesigning many existing ones. The new course opened in 1975, marking Peter’s first experience in designing and building golf courses — an opportunity that ultimately ‘opened many doors’ for him in the future. Over the following years, Peter completed more than 20 world-class golf courses and renovated over 20 others, establishing himself as one of the leading golf course designers in Southern Africa and beyond.

Thank you, Mr. Matkovich, for giving us Pinnacle Point — a golfing gift that truly keeps on giving.

Better short game, lower scores
Make it easier

Why are there so many loft and bounce variations for each Cleveland RTZ model? It’s because a “wedge set” needs to be built for your golf game.

Do you need a blended set, with some assistance on wedges you’ll use for fuller shots?

Set up to succeed

Invest the time to set yourself up with the wedge set that will help your game. Reduce the chances of mishits and chunked shots. Make it easier to make good contact consistently.

Book a wedge assessment
Take some time with us and let’s work out what wedge set configuration would provide you with a consistently better short game.

Have you played from 70 metres?
A really good idea is to come out to the club when it’s not busy or at the end of your day and play 9 holes from 70 metres. Let us know when you break 27.

The Cleveland HiBore XL Driver now has a face with 19% more face surface than the previous model. That translates into up to 17 extra metres when comparing identical swing speed and attack angle swings on contact away from the sweet spot.

Hence the Cleveland boast that “forgiveness has a whole new shape”. That’s the result of new materials, advanced manufacturing processes, Ai and super-computers assisting design, and rapid prototyping.

Surely we should put all that design and technology together with a proper fitting. After that, you shouldn’t be surprised at the difference it could make to your performance and experience.
