We have been given the very difficult task of finding a new Golf Director, as Quintin has accepted an exciting offer to move on to the next chapter of his and his lovely family’s lives.
Quintin, we will truly miss your friendly face, your willingness to assist no matter the request or the time, your energy, and most importantly, your love for the game and for the Members of Pinnacle. Thank you for the passion and care you’ve shown throughout your time with us. We wish you and your family nothing but the very best, and we look forward to seeing you on the fairways of our beautiful province in the future!
To our Members and Staff, please be assured that we take the responsibility of finding a suitable successor very seriously. Honouring The Halfway House
In South Africa, the halfway house has long been more than just a pit stop – it’s a cherished part of every round. While many golfers abroad play straight through 18 holes without so much as a pause, local golfers would never dream of tackling the back nine without a refuel, unless time is desperately short and the fairways are wide open.
1880s – Daw Anderson’s ginger beer stand
The Origins at St Andrews
The halfway tradition can be traced back to the 19th century on the Old Course at St Andrews. At the fourth hole – nicknamed the “Ginger Beer Hole” – vendor David “Daw” Anderson offered homemade ginger beer and lemon juice to weary golfers before they made their way back toward the clubhouse. What started as a welcome refreshment soon laid the foundation for a global golfing custom.
Evolution into a Formal Stop
Over time, this simple service evolved into the halfway house we know today. One of the earliest examples is the historic halfway hut at Sunningdale Golf Club in England, built in 1903, which quickly gained fame for its warm hospitality and excellent service. From there, the halfway house became an integral part of the golfing experience worldwide.
